We are powerful self-advocates in our own right, but we are even more powerful when we connect and unite with other self-advocates. This is especially true when we try and tackle systemic issues at the state or federal level. It takes a mind shift from thinking about ourselves and thinking about others. It’s not about me but all of us. For people who have been raised to be compliant, it’s hard to think about what’s in our best interest. That’s how I was raised and I was praised for being compliant. I had to grow personally to start thinking about myself. The next step and it was a big step was to start thinking about the well being of others. This means taking the time to get to know others and hear their stories and establish bonds with them. It takes effort but it is really empowering. So try connecting with your peers and see the difference it makes.
