Suffering

Do people with disabilities suffer? Are we victims? Should we be pitied? Do we need to be ashamed of our disabilities? Is it fair for others to judge us by our disabilities? These are all very worthwhile questions that I personally wrestle with. These are not abstract or academic questions but day-to-day questions. In many ways, I am a traditional kind of guy and look at things traditionally, but experience has taught me to take a kinder and gentler view of my disabilities. Having disabilities does affect my life and I live with significant limitations. There are things that I want that I will be never able to have, but if I take the big picture of my life, I have a lot going for me–my apartment, my Apple technology, my family, my friends, and my job and associations. They add great value and purpose to my life. I won’t say that having disabilities are the greatest things that have happened in my life. Life would be certainly easier without them, but I am not ashamed of them, they are a part of me and what makes me whole.
