Decision Making

A very important skill for self-advocates and any adult internal is decision making which includes how to do something, problem solving, and life choices. If you are new to it figuring out how to do something is hard.k You might ask someone who is knowledgeable to show you how to do it. You might go on YouTube and watch a video. You might even read the instructions on how to do it.

These solutions are great for doing something, but what should you do if you run into a problem? My method for solving problems involves the following steps

  • Observe the situation and figure out what is going on
  • Gather information on how others have solved similar problems
  • Come up with an action plan
  • Implement the plan
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan
  • My favorite try every option you can think of until you find an option that works

Life decisions are the most demanding and most rewarding. They answer such questions as

  • What job should I take?
  • Where should I live?
  • How do I solve a family problem?
  • Should I get involved in a relationship with this person?

There are no clear guidelines for making life decisions, but talking to someone you trust–family, friends, and ILS worker may help.

Welcome to adult life and the decisions you will make. Be confident in yourself and  your ability to make smart decisions.
