Social Justice

Social Justice covers a wide variety issues that affect a group of people, like us with developmental disabilities. Poverty and unemployment for us is such an issue. I have a good full-time job with benefits, and a friend of mine just landed a job after searching years for one. It shouldn’t be this hard. The system needs to establish partnerships with the business Community. They are where the real jobs are, and find job matches tailored to meet both the needs of the employer and the employee. I have concerns with the SSA’s work incentive programs which I find complex and confusing. I found DOR channeled me into dead end jobs that I was ill suited. I will never be a good administrative assistant but I am a good consumer advocate. I was fortunate with volunteering leading to my job. When I was working part-time, all I could think of was having a full-time job. I knew I was capable of it. I just needed the Opportunity to prove it. I got my Opportunity but how many of us never do. We just end up on SSI and live in poverty. Things need to change.
