There are some universals in life. We want to be happy, proud, have close family, and friends. We also want to be successful and respected by our peers. This can be absolute or relative. I will save a discussion on absolute success for another day and talk here about relative success. I ask you are you successful? You may ask me what do I mean by that? I would say starting from where you are coming and the resources you have, have you reached some if not all of your dreams? I say some because it is awfully hard to reach all your dreams. I will settle for some. Did you reach your dreams with grace, dignity, and integrity? I think it is more of a success for a person to work their way off SSI and into the middle class than for someone to graduate from a prestigious school and earn a six-figure income. It is all relative, but for many of us self-advocates it makes a world of difference.
