With the chaptering of SB 639, the state has joined 13 other states in ending the shameful practice of paying persons with developmental disabilities a subminimum wage. DDS, Regional Centers, and providers must make a genuine and wholehearted commitment to the law’s implementation. To begin with regional centers must educate their consumers of this law and impact it will have on their lives. Foot dragging is no excuse. People with developmental disabilities have every right to be informed and RCs have every obligation to do so. Times in the DD world are changing and the status quo is no longer acceptable. Reforms like self-determination and the end of subminimum reflect this.
