Today we observe Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. No man transformed advocacy as he did. He led with a call to justice, fairness, and equality, and he had a dream of unity for all people. I was too young to remember his civil rights initiative. It was that terrible year of 1968 filled with assassinations, the Tet Offensive, youth protests, and race riots. I don’t think America has ever been the same since then. It was a year that we lost our innocence as a nation. It seems that this nation has taken a downward spiral ever since then. Our response to the pandemic reveals how divided we are as a people. This would be the last thing King would have wanted. I have read about the divide and the causes for it, but I still don’t get it. How can a nation as great as the US be so torn in two? What will it take to unite this country? We deserve better than this. How much blood, sweat, and tears must be shed to heal America. There is a lot I would like to advocate for, but unity tops them all.
