I like to talk about meeting needs, striving for goals, and reaching dreams. Those are important parts of Self-Determination. Another import of it is the dollar sign. Supports and services don’t come free, they cost money. The legislature decided that Self-Determination would be cost neutral. That means our budgets wouldn’t go up just because we are in Self-Determination, but we would have greater control of how the monies in our budget are spent. For some of us that is a sobering reality because we must live monetary limitations. That is why I spend so much of my personal funds supplementing my SDP. Living within budget constraints is a painful part of adult life. It is an ongoing and developing skill, that takes a life time to master. There is and always will be an additional service that I would like to be included in my plan. just like there are things I would like to buy but can’t afford to. Part of adult life is living within our means and being at peace with that.
