The disability system knows well how to coddle people with disabilities. They dole out SSI checks, provide them with Medi-Cal, the lucky few get Section 8 apartments. and some take continuing classes or classes at a community college. The really lucky ones get assistance with mass transit. Yes, the system knows how to keep us comfortable, but we want full, meaningful, and purposeful lives. We want more that physical accessibility. We want competitive, integrated employment in our communities. There may be more to life than employment, but it sure helps pay the bills, build our identity, and structure our days. Granted there are limitations what the system can do in a free, competitive labor market, but it must do more. There is no excuse for us to live wasted lives.
