Disability Pride

Society tells us that having a disability is a bad thing. It is a reason for scorn, segregation, pity, guilt, shame, and we are broken. These are terrible messages to hear and undercut our self-esteem. Disability Pride tells us a very different message. It tells us to celebrate our whole personage. including our disabilities. We are not broken needing to be fixed. Our lives are not tragic, a victim of a capricious fate. We have every reason to celebrate our lives. Disability pride says no to guilt and shame. We have a right to be integrated community and to access the resources of the community. We are not a burden to society, but add to society’s wealth.
