Control

Control is 1 of 5 pillar principles of Self-Determination. The others are freedom, choice, accountability, and confirmation.

Control is the right of the Self-Determination participant or authorized agent to direct their monies in their budget are spent–buying Uber cash for non-medical transportation.

For those outside of Self-Determination, having control means being able to call your service coordinator when you need help or there is a problem with your services. It means deciding when, where, and whom to invite to your IPP meeting. It means you have the right of association which includes joining a people first chapter.

Control also covers personal finances. It could be setting up a CalABLE accountable and putting money aside to buy a car. I have control over my finances, so I put some money away for a rainy day, and some money away for retirement.

Control even applies to us. We don’t have to put up with bullying or other forms of abuse. Doctoral Malay tell you that you have a difficult diagnosis and prognosis, but you oversee living your life in the present with dignity and grace.

Control may mean engaging in difficult and challenging conversations to get your wants, needs, and hopes met.
